Does ChatGPT Have a Memory? How It Works in 2025

ChatGPT’s memory feature allows it to remember information about you across conversations. Here’s how it works, what it stores, and how to control it.

ChatGPT Memory: The Basics

As of 2025, ChatGPT (Plus and above) can:

  • Remember facts you share about yourself across multiple conversations
  • Update its knowledge of you over time as you share more
  • Reference past information without you repeating yourself each session

The free tier has limited memory. ChatGPT Plus gets expanded memory.

What ChatGPT Can Remember

  • Your name, job, location, preferences
  • Projects you’re working on
  • Communication style preferences (‘be concise’, ‘use technical language’)
  • Interests and hobbies
  • Family situation if you mention it

What ChatGPT Cannot Remember

  • Conversations you’ve had before memory was enabled
  • Very long, detailed context (memory captures facts, not full conversation histories)
  • Information from third-party apps or plugins

How to Control ChatGPT Memory

  1. View memories: Settings → Personalization → Memory → View Memories
  2. Delete specific memories: In Memory view, click the trash icon next to any memory
  3. Delete all memories: ‘Clear all memories’ in settings
  4. Disable memory entirely: Toggle off ‘Improve model for everyone’ and memory settings

Does Claude Have Memory?

Claude has a ‘Projects’ feature (Pro plan) that can maintain context within a project, similar to persistent memory. However, Claude doesn’t automatically remember information across all conversations the same way ChatGPT’s memory does. Each new chat starts fresh unless you’re in a Project.
