Most of what gets written about AI tools is either hype or dismissal. Here is what actually happened when an information professional used Claude Pro, ChatGPT Plus, and Perplexity Pro for 12 months of real work.
What Changed Permanently
Writing workflow: Starting from scratch on any professional document feels like unnecessary difficulty now. The blank page problem is solved. Starting from a Claude draft — even one that is 50% right — is faster and less anxiety-inducing. This is not about output quality; it is about flow and momentum.
Research starting points: Perplexity Pro replaced my “quick Google” habit for professional research. The cited answers are faster to evaluate and the follow-up question flow maintains context better than browser tab accumulation.
Long document analysis: Before Claude’s 200K context, analyzing lengthy documents (contracts, reports, research papers) meant slow, careful reading and note-taking. Now I upload and interrogate. The time savings on complex document work is the single biggest ROI item.
What Did Not Change Much
Creative writing: AI drafts help less for genuinely creative work where voice and originality matter most. Editing AI creative outputs takes as long as writing from scratch.
Strategic judgment: AI does not make better decisions than experienced professionals. It makes producing the work product around those decisions faster.
